What matters to me, and why?

After a very long hiatus, here I am again! I think that my style of writing has also changed somewhat, so here's a short essay of mine that I find particularly meaningful and memorable. After reading this essay, you guys should take a few minutes and just think. Sometimes we get surprising glimpses into ourselves by just letting our mind wander. Then again, maybe I'm just being dramatic hahahaha.

The essay was entitled, yes you guessed it : What matters to you, and why?

I could taste the fiery, hot liquid in my mouth, delectable and mouth-watering, filled with herbs and spices and everything nice. I pinched a bit of the roti canai and dipped it into the burning, orange sauce, all the while marveling at its simplicity. This hot sauce is very symbolic to me, partly because of its taste, but mostly because it reminds me of home, of my family, and of my country. Lo and behold, the sauce is actually curry!

I come from a multiracial country, Malaysia, where Malays, Chinese, Indians and multiple ethnic groups live together in harmony. I am essentially a Malay, but my great grandfather was actually from India. Every weekend, my family and I would go to the mamak stall and eat roti canai, curry, and thosai for breakfast. We would laugh and share fun experiences together, all the while savoring the magnificent taste of Malaysian food.

I came to realize that when I travel overseas, curry will always serve as a reminder of my homeland and my family, taking me back to all the fond memories I have with them. People may not understand why curry matters to me, but to me curry reminds me that I always have somewhere that I belong to, home.

I hope that you guys can find what matters to you too, and just grab of hold of it/them. Never let go.
